Community projects

The Trust works with local communities to encourage them to get involved in various projects ranging from practical conservation tasks and compost ambassadors to our local supporter groups and Salisbury Wildlife Project. Community projects support groups of volunteers and schools, helping them improve their towns and villages for wildlife. They also work closely with local authorities and residents to make town parks better places for wildlife.
Nature reserves have been created, ponds have been restored, hedgerows planted, wildflower meadows sown and riverbanks repaired. More people have started recycling, using real nappies and composting, so reducing their carbon footprint.
If you would like to know more and get involved you can use the links opposite to find out more about the projects and how you can get involved.
Compost ambassadors
Compost ambassadors are volunteers from across the county who are either experienced composters or people who are dedicated to the cause and willing to learn more. To become a compost ambassador, volunteers attend a one-day training course to learn how to find solutions to common composting problems. This gives ambassadors the knowledge and confidence to promote home composting in their local communities.
Fairtrade
Our Fairtrade volunteers help ensure a better deal for producers from developing countries by promoting Fairtrade goods. They provide support and help with co-ordinating local events. Volunteers work locally, all-year but particularly during Fairtrade fortnight, which is in March.
The Living Churchyards and Cemeteries
The scheme recognises the main function of the churchyard, burial and crematoria grounds, chapel and church and aims to maintain a respectful surrounding for these functions. At the same time, it enables local communities to get involved in the management of their churchyards for the benefit of wildlife whilst maintaining a neat and tidy setting.
Local supporter groups
The Trust organises a wide variety of events for the public throughout the year. Anything from hands-on activities such as moth watching evenings and river dipping sessions, to illustrated talks on a wide variety of environmental topics open to all members of the public. The vast majority are organised and run by volunteers from the Trust’s local supporter groups.
Real nappy network
The Trust is constantly working on new ideas, events and initiatives to promote real nappies in Wiltshire and due to this volunteers are crucial in this campaign. We would actively encourage anyone who believes in the work and the ethos of the Trust to get involved. The voluntary roles can be wide and varied and assistance is always needed.
Salisbury wildlife project
The Salisbury Wildlife Project is managed by the Trust and funded by Salisbury District Council to encourage local communities to get involved in the conservation of their local environment and to manage land for the benefit of wildlife. The project began in 1997 and since then has engaged many different groups, communities and individuals to become more involved in looking after their local area and the wildlife that lives there.
Wiltshire world changers
Wiltshire World Changers is a network of community groups and individuals working for the environment that encourage and support each other to create a more sustainable Wiltshire, and, by adding a local voice to the wider campaign, help reduce our environmental impact.
